Timber Floor Adhesive Buying Guide
Do you need adhesive, or can you float?
Most modern laminate and many engineered oak floors can be floated over a suitable underlay without any adhesive at all. Glue-down installation is generally used when the subfloor is concrete, when you are installing over in-slab heating, or when the manufacturer specifies it for the specific product you have chosen. If you are unsure which method your floor requires, check the installation guide that comes with your flooring or ask our team before purchasing.
Estrobond 75 — structural timber floor adhesive
Koala Estrobond 75 is a flexible polyurethane adhesive designed for gluing engineered timber and parquet directly to concrete or timber subfloors. It has a working time of approximately 30 to 70 minutes at standard conditions, a Shore A hardness of 35 to 50 once cured, and 600% elongation at break, which means it can move slightly with the floor without losing its bond. It is available in a 10L tub for larger jobs and a 600ml sausage format for use with a gun applicator, which makes it easier to control bead placement on smaller areas.
Self-levelling compound and primer
Before laying any floor on concrete, check that the slab is flat to within 3mm over 1.8m. If it isn’t, a self-levelling compound such as the Koala CL70 brings the surface up to spec quickly. CL70 covers approximately 3m² at 5mm thickness per 20kg bag and can take light foot traffic within four to six hours. The S150 primer is applied to the slab before the compound to improve adhesion and reduce the risk of pinholes.
Our team at Dandenong South and Kilsyth South can advise on quantities based on your floor area and subfloor condition.
